It has been a long 72 years but the wait is over! As of April 2022, the 1950 census has become available to the public.
Now it’s time to do some digging and answer those burning genealogical questions you may have!
The library has a few resources accessible at both the Main Street and Ridgel locations.
These resources include: Ancestry (in library only) and Heritage Quest. Heritage Quest can be accessed at home with your library card or at the library.
No library card? No problem! You can get a guest pass at the front desk.

Each census has different information that can be gathered, the 1950 census is no different!
Although not a lot of changes were made between the 1950 and 1940 census it is important to know what exactly can be found!

What can we find in the 1950 census that will help us with our genealogy needs?
The 1950 census includes:
Head of household name (last, first)
Name
Age
Gender
Race
Marital Status
Relationship to head of household
State or Country born
Naturalization Status
Employment Information such as occupation, industry, hours worked in a week
Type of Employer.

Keep in Mind- In the 1950’s the Korean War was in progress and the Overseas Census Reports, which were filled out by the military and U.S. Department of State employees who were stationed overseas, were not included in the census.
Remember not everyone filled out the census!
